The selected organizations combat a major challenge that is specific (but not unique) to each continent. The selected organizations operate at a grassroots level and demonstrate a record of local impact and basic infrastructure. These selections are the product of extensive web, published, and personal source outreach and research using the following criteria:
- Priority Issue: Organizations must serve a formidable humanitarian, public policy, or environmental challenge on each continent;
- Local Impact: Selected organizations should be primarily grassroots focused;
- Donor Input: Where appropriate, In the Running will be able to influence how its donations are used;
- Infrastructure and Management: Each selected organization must:
- Have a basic level of infrastructure, indicated by (for example) NGO, nonprofit, incorporated, or fiscal sponsor status; a functioning web page; and a demonstrated track record or business plan;
- Provide feedback from external parties or press articles on the effectiveness of the organization;
- Make financial records available on an annual basis;
- Provide tax deductions to U.S.-based donors on a look-through basis; and
- Respond to communications from In the Running in advance of realizing any donation by In the Running.
